IN 2015, 45 YEARS AFTER THE FACT,
Tedeschi Trucks Band invited the remaining members
of Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen band to
recreate their eponymous 1970 live album onstage
at the LOCKN’ Festival in Arrington, VA. Bandleader
and “Master of Space and Time” Leon Russell was
there, as were Rita Coolidge and “Feelin’ Alright” scribe
Dave Mason. Also along for the ride were Mad Dogs
and Englishmen progeny like Chris Robinson, Warren
Haynes and John Bell. (Candida, the stage-dog from
Pierre Adidge’s original 1971 tour film, was not available.)
Counting the 12 members of TTB, 29 performers threw
down that night. They paid homage to Cocker, who died
in 2014, and his shambolic, once-in-a-lifetime Mad Dogs
& Englishmen — widely considered one of the greatest
live albums in rock history.
The LOCKN’ concert was captured by director Jesse
Lauter in a feature-length documentary Learning to Live
Together: The Return of Mad Dogs & Englishmen (2021)
which goes behind the scenes for the three days of
intimate rehearsals leading up to the concert, including
rare musical collaborations, and revealing interviews with
Derek, Susan and the event’s major players.
